The Technique
The Pilates Method
is a conditioning program that improves muscle control, flexibility, coordination,
and strength. The basic principles of Pilates conditioning are to increase
awareness of the body as a single integrated unit, to improve alignment
and breathing, and to increase efficiency of movement. The method consists
of a sequence of precise exercises done on specially designed equipment
of on the mat with small equipment. The exercises are based on the principle
that by developing a strong and flexible torso with a stabilized core
(abdominal, back and pelvic muscles), the whole body can be balanced,
aligned and conditioned for optimal performance.
Today, the teachings
Joseph Pilates have been updated by applying current knowledge of anatomy
and physiology to offer a more effective and safer exercise program. These
evolved programs include more pelvic and shoulder girdle stabilization
exercises and the concepts of "neutral" spine and pelvis. Neuromuscular
core stabilization techniques are used to strengthen and lengthen muscles,
improve abdominal and back strength, improve postural alignment and body
mechanics, reduce joint stress, balance whole body strength with flexibility,
and reduce stress and tension.
According to Joseph
Pilates "It is the mind which builds the body." Consistent with
Pilates' teaching, the Pilates-evolved technique integrates the mind,
body and breath to improve awareness of postural alignment, muscle function
and control. Correct breathing promotes efficiency of movement and stress
reduction. Pilates-evolved workouts produce feelings of relations and
revitalization
Pilates-evolved techniques
are a safe, effective complement to aerobic activities such as walking,
jogging, swimming, or cycling. Ahead of its time when it was originated
over seventy years ago, the Pilates Method is unlike many of the stressful
and potentially harmful body conditioning programs of the last few decades.
Maintaining the essence of Joseph Pilates' original teachings, the Pilates-evolved
technique enhances them with current biomechanical knowledge to offer
safe, effective programs for overall body conditioning and injury prevention
as well as rehabilitative therapy.
